Two numbers matter: each card, and all cards together
Utilization = balance ÷ credit limit × 100. Run it per card and overall — scoring models can look at both.
Example: $500 on $2,500, $1,200 on $6,000, $0 on $1,500 — $1,700 of $10,000 in limits = 17% overall, every card at 20% or less.
Change one card to $900 on a $1,000 limit and it sits at 90% — while the overall figure still reads just 20%.
The CFPB notes experts generally advise using no more than 30% of available credit. Lower is generally better.
Issuers usually report the statement closing balance — not today's app balance. Enter the statement figures for the number that counts.
